How to Get Final Expense Contracts: A Step-by-Step Guide for Agents

October 18, 2026 · FEX Agent Contracting

Getting final expense contracts is mostly paperwork, and most of it is done once. Here is the order that keeps it simple.

1. Hold an active resident life license

Carriers appoint you only in states where you hold an active license with life authority. If you also want Medicare supplement or Medicare Advantage, you need accident & health authority too. Non-resident licenses let you write in other states.

2. Have E&O coverage in place

Most carriers ask for proof of errors and omissions coverage during contracting. If you do not have it yet, say so on the application and we will point you in the right direction.

3. Complete anti-money laundering (AML) training

Carriers require a current AML course certificate. Keep the certificate handy as a PDF so you can upload it in seconds.

4. Build one SureLC profile

SureLC by SuranceBay stores your license, E&O, AML and banking details in one profile. Once it is complete, each carrier you request takes just an e-signature.

5. Expect a debit and background check

Carriers commonly run a Vector One debit balance report and a background check. Open chargeback balances with other carriers can delay or block an appointment, so clear them up first if you can.

6. Get appointed and start writing

Some carriers appoint in as little as 3 days. Timing depends on the carrier and your state, and each carrier makes the final decision.
